Comedy Capers

Every afternoon when I go our office Canteen I hope to get a glimpse of the latest happenings in the world. The TV in canteen is supposed to be tuned in to a news channel. Since I don’t have a TV at home, this is the only place where I get to see some news. But what I get to see everyday is some stand up comedy reality show. I wonder if the news channel show news anymore.
Entertainment programs shown through News channels wouldn’t have been so bad considering that I get to watch something atleast. But these shows are far from funny. And to see small kids crack double meaning jokes is just not funny. Why does the society want grown-up kids? Why do we need to take away their innocence and sweet childhood from them? We are definitely giving them a chance to showcase their talents but at what cost.
Why is it that News channels like CNBC and BBC have enough stories to broadcast but desi news channels need to resort to entertainment programs?

  1. Hey Sapna!
    Great Blog!
You seem to be an extremely prolific writer. You should have started this long time back.
Better late than never. Tres Bien!

Talking about news channels, you’ve hit the nail on the head. BBC has shown the world the difference that controlled and responsible journalism can bring to this world. Compare this with our so called mainstream ‘news’ channels. The hindi ones are worst than even the local cable news channels in terms of content. Sadly we have to agree that the reason they are dishing out such derogatory content is because there is also a corresponding demand for such material. The supply-chain principle at work! When will we grow up?

Waiting for more content. Keep the good work going 🙂

    • Thanks Tanzeel 🙂 and that was a great comment too.

I am not sure of the supply-chain principle here since we have enough entertainment channels to meet the demand. But yes some amount of introspection as to what we as a society demand from the media is also very much necessary.

  2. Hey Sapna,
Been there,… done that …. got over it. (There is no point in pondering about stuff that cannot be controlled by us.)
The answer to your why is two stupid things,
    1) Money …. News channel idiots have lots of it & are greedy for more. How better to satisfy your greed earning tons by showing what is popular rather than what matters.
    2) Stupid Public … The idiotic public prefer to see what the celebrities do in their homes all day rather than whats happening in the world (even if its the end of the world… Ok so North Korea did a nuclear test, whats Kareena Kapoor having for lunch???)
Well dont get me wrong “What Kareena Kapoor has for lunch” is question of national importance for some but then you do what I do, GET CABLE!!!
Then u wont have to look at the stupid TV shows in the canteen.

  3. Sapna: being from the media industry- will jst say one thing, runing a 24X7 news channel is no joke but these channels have made one out of it… 🙂

happy writing to you and happy reading to us! 🙂

    Bon Chance!

  4. Hey Pallavi. Glad to see your comment:) I believe working in media is more than just a job. It has lots of social responsibility with it. And to live up to it is no joke and in fact a challenge.

As a country India has great potential we should be utilising our media to showcase its strength and help create a more aware society and of course entertainment will always remain a integral part of television.

  5. babes! you bet it is a CHALLENGE in capital words.. but we learn to work within it without compromising on ethics… everything has two sides to it.. media is no different.

there are loads of good stuff also that media does and yeah.. m only happy to work with it so closely!
if we ever get around talking will tell you some good and some not so good experiences.. til then tk good care.. will c u around

  6. Yeah I do agree with you …
But I would not blame the TV channel instead if one doesn’t like the content then just change the channel ..!!

  7. Hi Prasad.

Unfortunately for me changing the channel is not an option(Canteen TV).

But even if I could that would be a work around. Unless these channels know what the viewers want they will continue to broadcast what they think we’ll like. We need to provide our feedback right???

  8. I remember a dialogue from the movie ‘Page 3’. When an irate Konkana Sen goes to her editor Boman Irani and questions why does he allow publishing of the stupid page 3 gossips, He says, “Bikta hai to Chhapna padta hai”, meaning if it sells, it has to be printed. How many of you guys know that 90% of the content in Bombay Times is all paid for?

Thats the reality. Media shows or prints what the masses like to see. But I agree some times they get over board. Some times they show what they want people to see and believe.

@Pallavi: A challenging job is no excuse for under performance.

  9. Everyday when I pick up the newspaper I read Bombay Times first and then the Times of India!!!

And I like reading gossip too. But I like it on page 3(read Bombay Times) and not on the front page Newspaper. The same holds with news channels. I would watch Zoom TV for bollywood gupshup but wouldn’t want the same content on a news channel.

  10. @ Sapna: :).. You know this is the reason that the newspaper takes money for publishing news including Bombay Times because they know people read it first. These guys have made it business model of the paper… In nutshell if I have the money I can be on Pg1, Pg 3 now is a passé. I happen to know the Ed who started this culture before it became such a hit!

@ mayur: when I said working in media is a challenge, I meant working with people who are in the business of news but are not responsible towards it… It is a challenge to work with in the system without compromising on ethics.

What say you?
