Google turning twelve

Google 12th Bday Doodle

It is Google’s 12th birthday today. The Doodle is a simple cake with Google’s name on it and the L substituted by a candle.  Guess it doesn’t want the resources strained more after the “Google Instant” release. While I find it a waste of processing power, I thought people liked it. But found out of late not everybody is in its favor. Anyway considering that Google is a libra it may be a part of the libra vanity 😉 .

The Google 10th Bday page was a particularly interesting one. There was also a fake google 12th bday page with balloons and gifts which popped up when users made a spelling mistake and typed goggle instead of google.  Looks like someone wants to make the birthday more meaningful 😛

Anyway Happy Birthday Google 🙂

Flintstones 50th Anniversary

Today’s(30th Sept ) Google Doodle for Flintstone’s 50th Anniversary. Must say I am loving it 😀

What is Success?

“Success to me is about Vision. It is the ability to rise above the immediacy of pain. It is about imagination. It is about sensitivity to small people. It is about building inclusion. It is about connectedness to a larger world existence. It is about personal tenacity. It is about giving back more to life than you take out of it. It is about creating extra-ordinary success with ordinary lives”.
– Subroto Bagchi

Subroto Bagchi is a co-founder of MindTree Ltd., an international IT consulting company.  He was redesignated as the “gardener” in the company a couple of years back. The link below is his welcome address at IIM B. An extraordinary tale how he learnt his lessons of life.

Do read it.

Engineer – The Skilled One

“You can be a Doctor and save lives… You can be a Lawyer and defend lives… You can be a Soldier and protect lives… But why to play with others life??? So we simply became an engineer to screw up our own life.” 😀

This was my friends facebook status today as it is “Engineers Day” i.e Sir M. Visweshwariah’s Birthday. Last year I had also written a post about the same. Engineer developed from the Latin root ingeniosus, meaning “skilled”. An engineer is thus a clever, practical, problem solver. The spelling of engineer was later influenced by back-formation from engine. However, the term later evolved to include all fields where the skills of application of the scientific method are used. Hence Engineers are supposed to be flag bearers of change, of impacting lives and making them simpler everyday.

Interesting today also happens to be “The Lehman Day”. This day Lehman brothers filed for bankruptcy (Sept 15, 2008). Also changing lives by the day or should I say overnight. The world woke up on the Monday morning to this shocking news none expected. And repercussions felt throughout the world.

And even more interestingly just two days back Sept.13 SENSEX crossed 19000 points, reassuring and rebuilding our hopes. We still haven’t emerged fully from the economic crisis but have learnt some valuable lessons which hopefully would not be forgotten soon.

Happy Engineer’s Day!!!

PS: This post was for 15th Sept. but due to the delay in posting, it is going live on Sept.16

Happy Ganesh Chaturthi

Happy Ganesh Chaturthi to all 🙂

Today is the day when we celebrate the birthday of the Elephant-God. As a kid the one story that I have heard the most is the curious tale of  Ganesha’s birth. My Granny loved telling the story and I equally loved listening to all her stories. Every morsel that she put in my mouth was accompanied by her interesting narration.

It is believed that Goddess Parvati before going to take bath and saw that there were no attendants. Hence she created this figure from the turmeric paste she had prepared for herself and infused life into it.  She instructed him to not let anybody in while she was taking bath and Ganesh followed her orders. After a while, Shiva returned from a long period of meditation and tried going in to meet Parvati  only to be stopped by this little boy. Shiva was infuriated to be stopped by this stranger. Shiva then told him that he was her husband and demanded to be let in. But this boy would go to any length to keep his word given to Parvati and hence promtly refused. Shiva could not take it any longer and cut his head off to enter inside.

Moments later when Parvati came out saw her son’s body lying lifeless and started crying. She demanded that her son be brought back to life immediately. But Shiva couldn’t find the head anywhere. Shiva knew he couldn’t return with out his son’s head and ordered his ganas to get the head of the first creature sleeping facing north which happened to be an elephant. This was then fixed as Parvati’s son’s head. And hence the eleplant head and the name Gana-pathi(head of ganas). Parvati was happy to see him back to life. Shiva also promised Parvati that he would become remover of obstacles and would be worshipped before all the other gods. Hence the name Vignaharta and as a result all occasions starts with Ganesh-pooja.

Hope Ganesha removes all obstacles and bring all the happiness and success you deserve in your life..

Happy Birthday Ganesha!!!
